Verity by Colleen Hoover – book review

A new day a new book, right?

Verity by Colleen Hoover was a blind choice I made in the bookstore without reading any reviews about this book.

I had no expectations when I bought the book so imagine my surprise when it was 3am in the morning and I was finishing the last page of this book.

When I say I was hooked it is because Colleen’s writing style made me crave for more.

Made me want to know what happens next.

Summary: Verity is a thriller that keeps the reader hooked until the end.

Lowen Ashleigh is a struggling writer on the brink of financial ruin when she accepts the job offer of a lifetime. Jeremy Crawford, husband of bestselling author Verity Crawford, has hired Lowen to complete the remaining books in a successful series his injured wife is unable to finish.

Lowen arrives at the Crawford home, ready to sort through years of Verity’s notes and outlines, hoping to find enough material to get her started. What Lowen doesn’t expect to uncover in the chaotic office is an unfinished autobiography Verity never intended for anyone to read. Page after page of bone-chilling admissions, including Verity’s recollection of the night their family was forever altered.

Lowen decides to keep the manuscript hidden from Jeremy, knowing its contents would devastate the already-grieving father. But as Lowen’s feelings for Jeremy begin to intensify, she recognizes all the ways she could benefit if he were to read his wife’s words. After all, no matter how devoted Jeremy is to his injured wife, a truth this horrifying would make it impossible for him to continue loving her . . .

Characters:

Lowen Ashleigh: a struggling writer on the brink of financial ruin. She had a rough childhood that left some trauma that is not yet healed. She doesn’t trust herself very much and struggles with the impostors syndrome when it comes to her writing skils.

Jeremy Crawford: loving father, devoted husband. He is trying to keep his wife’s work alive after a tragic accident and brings Lowen as a co-writer for his wife popular series.

Verity Crawford: famous writer who’s destiny takes a dark twist and she barely survived a car accident. Now she needs constant care and is not able to keep writing or take care of her family.

Theme:

Deception and obsession with some blurred lines between fiction and reality.

The story is presented from the point of view of Lowen and Verity, creating an unreliable sense of reality and truth.

Conclusions:

Verity is a thriller that treats subjects as human relationships and the psychological complexity of the interactions.

I loved how vivid Colleen’s writing style is. I could see myself there with Lowen at each step.

I was there from the first page when she meets Jeremy due to an unfortunate accident, when she gets to his house to research for the books.

I was there when she was reading Verity’s manuscript and felt the horror and disgusting feeling.

I was there when Lowen and Jeremy developed their relationship and when they shared a secret that no one else can discover.

I was there when Lowen discovered a letter from Verity where the story has a different point of view from what she knew and felt the mixed feelings of shock and distrust.

The book ended and here I am confused about the truth. About who was the bad guy in the end and I am wondering if Lowen and Jeremy are end game or it could be a game Jeremy is playing.
